Origins of the name

The origins of the name 'Burnt Yates' is not 100% known, but certain suggestions have been made such as 'Some people say that Burnt Yates is called Burnt Yates because down at the bottom of the hill they used to burn gates'[2] and the name just evolved from Burnt Gates.

Education

Burnt Yates is home to the Burnt Yates CE Primary School[1] which Ofsted rated as 'Outstanding' in 2006/2007.[3] In total, 42 children attend this school.[2]

As for high schools, the village has none and the nearest ones are in Harrogate.

Employment

Burnt Yates is relatively affluent but with no statistics about the unemployment rates in the village, it can only be an assumption that people from Burnt Yates make a decent living. Burnt Yates is in the Leeds City Region[4] and so it can be assumed a number of the villagers work in the city of Leeds. Because Harrogate is quite close to the village, it is likely too that some villagers work there too.

Geography

Burnt Yates is 1.2 miles north of the River Nidd and 10.2 miles east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is surrounded by scenic countryside visited regularly by the West riding Ramblers Association for walks.[5]

Transport

Burnt Yates is only a small village and as such has a very limited form of public transport. The majority of people in Burnt Yates wishing to travel would normally drive. However, bus companies, Hodgsons and Little Red Bus run a bus service that passes through Burnt Yates[6] and this, the Number 23 bus service from Harrogate to Markington is the primary bus route through the village.[6]

The main road through Burnt Yates is the B6165, the main road from Knaresborough to Glasshouses, North Yorkshire.[7]
